Abstract

This paper deals with the application of certain strategies to develop creativity normally used in fields such as engineering design, to one of the English subjects I teach at the School of Architecture in Madrid called:"Cities with a Name"(English III). The final aim of the activity proposed here is to improve the students´competence when communicating in English orally as much as in writing, while dealing with specific architectural and urbanistic issues. The application of these theories is based on the fact that, because of the School where they are, the students of Architecture must be especially creative to be able to work on their field of interest, and this ability can be used as an important tool in the English class. The experience/exercise explained here consists on the elaboration of the regulations for an international contest whose aim is to choose the best project for a monument/museum which commemorates the events happened in September 11 2001 in the city of New York. In fact, this is only an example of the many that can be proposed that follow the same working scheme.
