Intra-urban inequalities and sustainable development in cities. The case of Oaxaca, Mexico

Authors

Abstract

This article analyses the relationship between intra-urban inequalities and sustainable development in the main cities of Oaxaca, under the hypothesis that, with a higher degree of development, intra-urban inequalities decrease. The main component statistics technique and the Gini index methodology are used to measure intra-urban inequality. The HDI methodology, adding the environmental dimension, is used to measure sustainable development. The results show that the greater the development, the greater the intra-urban inequalities. It is concluded that the development process that has been implemented in the cities has not had the desired effect, causing imbalances in the urban territory, in addition, that it has not contributed enough to the achievement of sustainable development.
